Getting Older

Sickness continues around here.  Riley was running a temp of 101 this morning.  Scheduled a dr. appointment for her and they saw her at 2:40pm when they could fit her in.  Nurse took her temp and the first time it was 104.  Second time was 105.  Tested her for flu and strep - both were negative.  So we're to give her motrin/tylenol as we've been doing and if she's not better by Monday, we'll take her in again.

Madi had a good day at school.  There was an assembly for the fun run.  There were different prizes/awards for the kids who brought in the most money, kids who ran the most laps, etc... no monetary or gift prizes.  All of them had to do with things that were perks at school.  One kid gets to be principal for the day.  One gets the cafeteria named after them.  One gets to be assistant coach in the gym.  Madi's class won an extra P.E. class for being the fourth grade class that brought in the most money for the fundraiser.  Each student also received a ribbon. She earned a silver ribbon which was for students who ran between 6-10 laps.

Madi has been complaining of a headache today which I have no doubt she has.  Gave her some motrin tonight and she was already feeling better before bed.  She's been asking us to check her temperature about every five minutes and claiming she has a terrible fever.  Her temp today was 97.8 this afternoon when she got home.  She did go to the nurse, but the nurse felt her and sent her back to class with an ice pack.  I'm a little confused about the ice pack, but she didn't have a fever so I guess she felt like it would make her feel better to have something?!

There are signs that she's growing up and both the nurse and her hairdresser made comments that let us know that things are progressing.  Hairdresser said that her hair - particularly the lower back part - is very oily on the scalp which is a sign of hormones.  The nurse said that a slightly elevated temp like she had two days or three days ago of 99 can also be signaling hormones.  So Madi and I had a short talk about "changes."

I asked her if she was feeling any stomach cramps.  She said that she'd had some the past few days.  I asked her if she had an idea of what the cramps, the headache and the low-grade fever could signal.  She said no.  So I just told her that they can often be tied to hormone changes and are her body's way of saying that it's getting ready for changes.  I told her that it doesn't mean it will happen tomorrow or next month, but that it's just telling her that it's working right and that things will come.  Even if it's in a year or more.

So I told her that while she may feel like she's getting sick, it may not have anything to do with that.  And let her know that if anything happens, she doesn't need to be embarrassed about letting me know.

She goes "Oh great!  This is the best conversation ever!  The one everyone wants to have."  And then we both laughed and I said "oh yeah - you know it!"  I'm sure she'll love that I'm posting about this :)

Madi was able to play a few hours of World of Warcraft tonight and really enjoyed that.  Will probably have quite a bit of time this weekend to play and relax.  She has a big project due in two weeks, is doing very well on her FasttMath, and doesn't have homework besides these this weekend.  So should be a fun one.
